Professor Thomas Kane, Ph.D. (1924 - 2019)

Professor Thomas R. Kane was born in Vienna, Austria in 1924 and spent his early years tinkering with radios and other gadgets; he was an avid ice hockey player in winter and Alpine hiker in summer. In 1938, after the fall of Austria to the Nazis, he emigrated to the United States with his parents and two sisters, settling first in a run-down apartment on 135th Street in New York's Upper West Side -- not a nice part of Manhattan in those years. Tom's father, musical composer Ernest Kanitz, had been Professor of Music Theory at the New Vienna Conservatory and founder/conductor of an internationally-known women's chorus; he later became Professor in the School of Music at the University of Southern California. Tom's mother was an accomplished pianist and had been a composition student of Arnold Schoenberg. Like his two sisters, Tom had music lessons as a child, and he could always invent beautiful melodies if a piano was nearby.

When their family was forced to leave their country, Tom's mother contacted a French friend who was acquainted with well-known American author Dorothy Canfield Fisher. The Kanitz family was introduced to Fisher and invited to stay at her Vermont farm, where she ran a retreat for refugee European artists and their families. A director at the Quaker Oakwood school in Poughkeepsie, NY, Mrs. Fisher arranged for Tom to attend there on a scholarship. Tom was always grateful to Dorothy Fisher for his opportunity to leave New York City, to board at Oakwood School and receive a first-class education, and to work summers doing German/English language interpreting at Mrs. Fisher's farm, where he worked with refugee children. (Tom also spoke French, and later learned Russian and Portuguese in connection with various visiting professor engagements. In fact, his talent for languages was such that he mastered English -- and won a speaking contest in it -- by the end of his first year at Oakwood School.) Tom went on to Guilford College, a Quaker school in North Carolina, but during his first year there his mother died at the young age of 49. Soon after that, Tom left college and enlisted in the Army. It was around this time that he formally changed his name from Helmut Kanitz to Thomas Reif Kane.

Tom's experience working part-time in a photo studio while at Guilford was reason enough for the Army to assign Tom to serve as a combat photographer in the South Pacific from 1943-45. Thus Tom Kane may have been one of the few people who witnessed both the start and the end of World War II: in 1938 he and his family watched from their apartment windows as Hitler's troops marched into Austria, and in 1945 Tom was among the photographers capturing the moment of Japan's formal surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.

Shared memories

After the war Tom attended Columbia University on the GI Bill. He held many part-time jobs during his studies, including as a short-order cook at a lunch counter and as an apartment building manager, collecting rents and doing repairs. While at Columbia (1946-53) he earned B.S. degrees in both Mathematics and Civil Engineering, an M.S. in Civil Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Applied Mechanics. After graduating, Tom spent 45 years teaching Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, first at the University of Pennsylvania and -- from 1961 through 1994 -- at Stanford University. He gave innumerable lectures, seminars, and conferences around the world both before and after retiring from the Stanford faculty in 1994.

Professor Kane was the preeminent expert on, and author of, modern dynamics theory (known as "Kane Dynamics"), publishing 10 textbooks and over 170 technical papers. In 1988, Tom joined Online Dynamics and was instrumental in the symbolic manipulator Autolev, providing technical leadership and vast amounts of documentation. In 1994, after becoming Professor Emeritus of Mechanics and Computation at Stanford, Tom founded Kane Dynamics, Inc. a consulting company that, with Dr. Ken Chung, developed Animake, an animation program for Autolev and MotionGenesis.

In 2010 Professor Kane joined Motion Genesis as Senior Consultant to bring symbolic manipulation to engineers and the engineering classroom. He specialized in providing motion expertise to the biomechanical and defense industries and in the legal world.

Tom is survived by his wife Ann, daughter Linda, and granddaughter Elisabeth. He was predeceased by son Jeffrey (2014).
